The Enchanting Connection with Yellowstone Coyotes

Yellowstone's coyotes have a way of capturing my attention every time I encounter them. While many visitors come hoping to see wolves or bears, I often find myself drawn to these intelligent and resilient animals. Their alert expressions, graceful movements, and ability to thrive in one of the harshest environments in North America never cease to amaze me.
Over the years, I've spent countless hours watching and photographing coyotes in Yellowstone. I've seen them hunting in the first light of dawn, their coats glowing gold against the snow. I've watched them pause to listen for the faint sounds of prey beneath the surface, then leap with precision into the air. I've also witnessed quieter moments, when a coyote curls up in the snow for a midday nap, seemingly at peace in a landscape defined by winter.
Each encounter reveals something new.
In January, I had the opportunity to follow the story of two coyotes moving across Yellowstone's winter landscape. The temperatures were bitterly cold, and snow blanketed the valley, creating a scene of remarkable beauty and stillness. The park felt wild and untouched, a place where nature continued its rhythm despite the challenges of winter.
As I observed the pair, I noticed the bond they shared. They stayed close, often glancing toward one another as they moved through the landscape. At times they searched for each other, and when reunited, continued their journey together. Watching them reminded me that life in the wild is not only about survival. It's also about relationships, partnerships, and connection.
Inspired by those moments, I created a short video called Together in the Wild. The film follows these two coyotes as they navigate Yellowstone's winter landscape, capturing the quiet interactions that spoke volumes about their companionship.
Experiences like these are why I love wildlife photography. While a photograph can showcase an animal's beauty, spending time observing wildlife reveals something deeper. It offers a glimpse into their lives, their behaviors, and the connections that help them endure.
The coyotes of Yellowstone continue to inspire me. They remind me that even in the harshest conditions, there is beauty, resilience, and companionship. Every time I photograph them, I leave with more than images. I leave with a deeper appreciation for the wild spirit that thrives in Yellowstone and the stories waiting to be discovered there.
